SOlutions
To help Jakarta's ever-growing litter problems, our team has come up with a few solutions.
conversion of plastic to fuel.
The amount of plastic in waste is devastatingly high. Luckily, there is a way to turn plastic bottles into a fuel, a material with a variety of uses. The source material is polyethylene, the most common type of plastic in the world. Polyethylene does not degrade easily and can linger in the environment for hundreds of years, which makes it a problem for Jakarta, especially for the oceans and waterways.
The products can be used for home heating, ingredients for gasoline, kerosene and diesel. Companies sell the petroleum products to manufacturers and industrial users, while fuels can help power cars, buses, ships and planes. Plastics-derived fuels can also deliver cleaner-burning fuel, due to the low sulphur content of plastics which could damage the environment as well our health.

INventions.
To help furthermore, we would like to introduce a few newly invented products that could decrease the amount of litter, ranging from sucking waste in the ocean to simply sweeping the streets clean from litter.

SEABINS
The Seabin is a solution to the pollution in the ocean. This piece of technology will help create a cleaner ocean and a healthy marine life. The Seabin isn’t big or bulky and can fit into the problem corners of marinas without being obtrusive or taking up dock space for boats. The waste in the Seabin is then collected easily and disposed of responsibly in the already establish waste disposal system of the marina. BARCODE BINS Did you know not all plastics and metals can be recycled? If you look for the recycling symbol on most packaging, it’s often filled with a number value. They denote what can and can’t be recycled. The computerized system of this newly-found Barcode Bin will automatically detect and separate the organic or non-organic and what is recyclable or can’t be recycled objects. Not only does this make recycling more simple, its practicality will drive people to start recycling and stop littering. BALLOT BINS Ballot Bin is a cigarette butt voting ashtray that uses provocative questions to engage different audiences and nudge them dispose of their cigarette litter properly, by casting their vote. Every week it posed a sporting question e.g. ‘Who is the best football player in the world?’ or ‘Star Wars or Star Trek?’ It asked the user to ‘vote with their butt’, creating a live public poll. A voting system encourages use of the ashtray, users vote by simply dropping their cigarette butt into one of the two bins. This is an interesting and fun approach into tackling problems on account of cigarette litter (due to cigarettes being the most frequent litter) that would encourage smokers to throw their litter away in an organised manner. Afterwards, the cigarette waste will be sent to TerraCycle and they will recycle it and turn the material into a variety of useful plastic products, such as plastic lumber and boards that can be used for a variety of items like construction holding, signage and table tops. GUMDROP ON THE GO Gumdrop On The Go is an anti-chewing gum littering campaign designed by Gumdrop Ltd. The provision of portable gum bins to members of the public makes it easier for correct disposal of chewing gum on-the-go. Returned gum from commuters would be recycled into new products. Users could deposit their full gumdrops to be entered into a competition which would increase the likelihood of people participating and avoid littering. The amount of chewing gum litter decreased substantially by 54% throughout the campaign in the UK, and we hope to incorporate this idea in Jakarta. |
